Hi there! I'm Jo.
On June 3, 2023, I saw my first Broadway show. Two days later, I saw my second. Not to be dramatic, but I really haven't seen the world quite the same way since.
Theater as a medium opened up my hunger for experiencing new stories and fresh perspectives, but it certainly did not end there. I saw my fifth Broadway show, The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window, less than three weeks after my first, and it served as another turning point in my story-seeking journey. Tears were shed, life decisions were questioned, and all I wanted was to experience it all over again. So I picked up the Lorraine Hansberry script in hard copy and could not put it down until I was done.
It was probably the first physical book I enjoyed, let alone read from start to end, since being forced to do so in high school. I really began to question the identity I’d built for myself as a STEM-oriented kid whose worst subjects in school were English and History. I asked myself: was my self imposed aversion towards the humanities simply because I hadn’t been presented with material that left me inspired?
Hundreds of hours in the theatre later, I'm still figuring that out. But it's safe to say I've found a new identity along the way – one that meets every story on stage, on screen, and on the page with love, intention, and appreciation.
